DUwop, Denison’s co-ed a cappella group, was founded during the 2008-2009 school year by a group of close friends who sang together in several university choirs. As a student-run organization, DUwop’s goal is to promote fellowship and creativity while producing quality a cappella music to share with the Denison community. Ultimately, DUwop strives to provide its members with the opportunity not only to share their love of music but also to expand upon it and grow as musicians and performers.
Rachel Block ‘23, DUwop’s Vice President, said it is a pleasure continuing to contribute to the longstanding and rich tradition of a cappella music on Denison’s campus. “Rehearsals are a great stress reliever and change of pace from my academic commitments,” she shared. “Not only have I learned a great deal as a musician and performer, but I have made some of my very best friends through this group.”
A favorite holiday memory for DUwop’s Music Director, Drew Nederveld ‘22, was caroling at different businesses in Granville such as Alfie’s and Village Coffee. “But at the end of the day,” he added, “we got invited by a local family to sing on their front porch for their kids and neighbors. They gave us hot chocolate and we got to chat with them afterwards. It was really nice to be connected to the community of Granville in that way.”
DUwop frequently performs on Denison’s campus for special events and campus organizations, and the outreach to the community beyond campus is important to the group as well. You can see DUwop’s next performance on Saturday, December 4 at 5:30 pm for the Granville Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour where they will perform in the Buxton Inn Courtyard.
