Foreign Language Modification
The general education curriculum at Denison University mandates a modern language proficiency requirement for all undergraduate students, regardless of their chosen major. However, students with disabilities that may significantly impact their ability to acquire a foreign language may be eligible for a modification to this requirement.
To request a modification, students must submit appropriate documentation to Accessibility & Disability Services from a qualified professional (e.g., physician, licensed psychologist) who has assessed the student’s disability and its potential impact on their ability to learn a foreign language.
Modifications granted by previous educational institutions (high schools, colleges) will not automatically be considered sufficient to fulfill the requirement at Denison. Students approved for a modification will fulfill the language requirement through alternative coursework offered in English, focusing on the in-depth exploration of a specific culture.
Denison University strongly encourages students to initiate the modification request process early in their academic journey to ensure optimal course selection and timely degree completion.
If the modification is approved, the student will then meet with the Chair of the Modern Language department to identify courses throughout the Denison University curriculum which can be used to fulfill the requirement as modified.
Advanced coursework in a foreign language is an essential component of the following academic programs: Global Commerce, French, Spanish, German, East Asian Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, and Middle East & North African Studies. Modification of the foreign language requirement for these programs is not permitted, as it would fundamentally alter the nature of the academic program.
