“Welcome Beck” Thursdays, hosted by the English and Journalism departments, presents essayist Garnette Cadogan in conversation. This weekly online series connects Denisonians and the general public with acclaimed writers and reporters.

Cadogan (best known for “Walking while Black”) is an essayist and journalist who focuses on history, culture, and the arts. Formerly the Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Scholar at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT, he is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University. He is the editor-at-large of Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas (co-edited by Rebecca Solnit and IPK Fellow Joshua Jelly-Schapiro) and is at work on a book on walking.

In this talk, Cadogan shares on the promise and perils of urban life, the vitality and inequality of cities, and the challenges of pluralism.

The “Welcome Beck” Thursdays events are part of the Beck Series, the virtual reading series of Denison University, highlighting the best in fiction, poetry, journalism, and scholarship. This event is funded by the Harriet Ewens Beck Endowment, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a gift by alumna Sue Douthit O’Donnell, ‘67.
