Curator’s Statement
With much appreciation to Professor of Music Ching-chu Hu’s visionary approach to organizing this year’s TUTTI Festival, this exhibition demonstrates the potential of Studio Art practice in the fertile Liberal Arts community at Denison. Working as the Denison Print Collective, my Advanced and Intermediate Printmaking students have used both their conceptual and technical skills to create the work you see here in the MIX Gallery. The project involved the use of multiple processes of Printmaking, including Intaglio, Woodcut, Monotype and Chine Colle in unconventional formats. Each art student selected a piece to be performed at this year’s festival as a point of inspiration. Like the music itself, the imagery speaks to the transcendent modes of thinking and finding ones place in the world both the Visual and the Performing arts allow. With the supplied headphones for each piece, visitors are asked to listen to the TUTTI compositions as they view the parallel prints themselves. With the Print Collective artists deciding on its title, SYMBIOSIS as an exhibition speaks not only to the intertwined relationship of music and visual art, but also the central context of studying and creating here at Denison.
I wish to thank the enthusiasm and hard work of all the art students in this exhibition, with a special shout-out of appreciation to Jenny Kim and Liz Rosenkranz.
Finally, much appreciation to my friend and frequent collaborator Christian Faur, Director of Collaborative Technology for making Arts for making this exhibition possible and all he does to bring the Fine Arts Division together for students and faculty.
