Even before SAAM was first nationally observed in 2001, advocates had been holding events, marches, and observances related to sexual violence during the month of April, sometimes during a week-long “Sexual Assault Awareness Week.”
This year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) program calendar is convened by the Denison Coalition for Sexual Respect. Special highlights of this year’s program include: trainings on survivor support (Helping Hands), film/TV screenings, a book discussion, and a scavenger hunt for first year students. There are both virtual and in-person options available, so we hope you will join us!
- The week of Saturday, April 3rd: Sexual Respct Banners will be put up around campus that were created from a number of organizations who support survivors. Banners were created last semester and are an annual project set forth by DCSR. Banners can be found behind Slayter, in Slayter, and in the Mitchell Center.
- Tuesday, April 6th: Helping Hands training will be from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM. Helping Hands is a program that enables students to be an up-stander and learn how to better support survivors through empathy building and traumed-informed care.
- Sunday, April 11th: First-Year Sexual Respect Scavenger Hunt outside Curtis East/West, Rain location Herrick. The scavenger hunt can be completed anytime that weekend. Photo evidence can be brought to a 45-minute long discussion with free Whit’s at 3:00PM.
- Tuesday, April 13th: Sexual Respect Chairs from Greek life organizations will be representing Sexual Respect Trivia at 7:30 PM.
- Wednesday, April 14th: Movie night with SHARE & OGS from 7:30 PM-9:00 PM screening ‘Pretty Young Woman’ in Slayter Auditorium. Dialogue will follow the movie screening.
- Thursday, April 15th: Helping Hands training will be from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM. Helping Hands is a program that enables students to be an up-stander and learn how to better support survivors through empathy building and traumed-informed care.
- Saturday, April 17th: Movie night with DCSR and BSU from 2:00 PM- 3:30 PM screening ‘I May Destroy You’ (HBO) followed by a discussion in Slayter Auditorium.
- Sunday, April 18th: Sexual Respect in Art displayed at the Moonies, opening at 1:00 PM.
- Monday, April 19th: Fresh Check Day behind Slayter from 1:00 PM-4:00PM. A number of sexual health and mental health organizations will have activities for students. Come see us all!

- Thursday, April 22nd: Presentation led by Timothy Bussey from Kenyon University - “The Impact of Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence on the Asexual Community” at 4:00 PM.
- Tuesday, April 27th: Discussion with Sara Lee on sexual misconduct and athletics at 4:00 PM.
- Wednesday, April 28th: Sexual Citizens Book Talk with Millie Ball at 5:30 PM.

- Friday, April 30th: Sexual Geography Project showcase in the FLEX space at the Denison Museum from 4:30 PM-6:00 PM. Submissions helped to establish the sexual geography of Denison’s campus based on spaces that allow students to feel sexually empowered.
