We are pleased to announce that Heather Pool has agreed to serve as the Interim Director of the Writing Center this year. As a grad student at the University of Washington, Dr. Pool was director of the Political Science/Law, Societies, & Justice/Jackson School of International Studies Writing Center for two years. Overseeing a staff of about 10 tutors, the Center did between 1,000 and 1,500 tutoring sessions each year. Dr. Pool was so interested in writing that she co-authored a piece with Allison Rank about how college instructors might craft better writing assignments. She served as Interim Director of the Denison Writing Center in the Fall of 2019 and is thrilled to be returning to that role this year.
Heather notes, “I would like each Denison graduate to be the person their peers go to for editing and writing help when they are in a job. One way to do that is to start thinking about your process of writing now, so that you can improve each of the four years you are here. Whether you enjoy, don’t mind, or positively dislike writing, coming to the Writing Center can be a path to improving your writing AND learning to enjoy it as a learning process.”
Heather’s work will be supported by Audrey Metzger ’17. Audrey was a student writing consultant at Denison for three years, fulfilling the student center manager role her senior year. For the 2017-2018 academic year, she worked as the Program Assistant for the center. Audrey is a 2017 Denison graduate with a degree in Creative Writing. She is thrilled to be virtually back on the Hill for the upcoming year, and is excited to help students hone their writing skills.
We are so pleased to have Heather and Audrey working with the Writing Center students this year!
