Peer Learning Strategist Program

You will learn how to: 

• Unpack and understand course learning goals and expectations.
• Implement metacognitive tools and tactics to improve critical thinking.
• Gain an improved capacity for academic work.

Tutors help students grasp challenging content and concepts in their courses and work through assignments. PLS mentors use research-based methods to work with students to maximize study time, learn more efficiently, and promote executive functioning skills.

Tutors help you:

• Grasp challenging content for a certain class.
• Learn difficult concepts and formulas within specific areas of content.
• Solve homework problems.
• Learn key study skills.

Peer Learning Strategists Help You: 

• Maximize study time and effort.
• Improve performance across all content and classes by showing you how to use research-based study tools and methods.
• Reduce unnecessary frustration by showing you how to figure out the information you need to learn.
• Learn more efficiently, saving you time and energy.
• Manage your learning, promoting independent learning and executive functioning skills.
• Prepare for graduate programs and future careers by helping you employ high-impact learning processes needed for prospects.

An understanding or evaluation of your ability to learn and think.

The program is open to students taking an introductory math or science course (e.g., biology, chemistry, data analytics, psychology, etc.).

You will meet a PLS weekly for an hour over three weeks. Some students have continued beyond the recommended minimum of three sessions.

We recommend you start after your first exam or significant graded assessment. You may start the program at any point during the semester, but allow enough time to complete the three sessions.

You and PLS mentors will meet at a mutually agreed-upon time and place.
