As students in our department explore what follows their Denison degree, two students are taking the first steps to enter the field of Actuarial Science. This semester, Julian Janczak ‘20 and Brandon Shull ‘19 took entrance exams in financial mathematics and probability which are needed for consideration into AS programs in graduate school. Both students have a background in mathematics, and for Julian, actuarial science seems to mix his interests in math and economics by using problem-solving and analysis to study interactions between people and businesses.

Julian and Brandon both agreed that the Denison Math and Computer Science department has been a huge help in their test preparation and networking. The AS exams combined difficult computation and complex theory, a challenge which they have faced before in courses here at Denison. Professors have also been a resource to Brandon and Julian. By Prof. Matt Neal’s recommendation, Brandon was able to find an internship in AS this past summer, solidifying that this is a career path he is interested in. For Julian, the department recommended that he attend a conference this fall where he was able to connect with actuaries working in the area. One such connection led Julian to a company which he is now interviewing with for a summer position.

Brandon and Julian are just two of many great examples of how our department is encouraging students to look for careers which fit their many passions, echoing the Liberal Arts education.
