The Denison Museum presents “Remembering the 60s,” an art and panel talk with photographer Rowland Scherman, Michael Jones ’72, and Denison faculty members Fareeda Griffith, associate professor of anthropology & sociology, and Em Rooney, visiting professor of photography. Moderated by John Jackson, associate professor of black studies, the panel will discuss the artwork, history and social issues that Scherman covered in his photographs.

As the first photographer for the Peace Corps in 1961, Scherman documented the work of volunteers all over the world. His photos helped define the image of the agency we know today. He became a free lance photographer in 1963, and his photographs appeared in Life, Look, National Geographic, Time, Paris Match, and Playboy among many others. He photographed many of the iconic musical, cultural and political events of the 60’s including the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, the March on Washington, the Beatles first U.S. concert and Woodstock.

Scherman traveled with Bobby Kennedy on his campaign for the presidency, went on tour with Judy Collins, and was in the studio when Crosby, Stills and Nash recorded their first album. In 1968, he won a Grammy Award for the cover photo of Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits.

Denison alumnus Michael Jones ’72 and his wife Christine edited Scherman’s book of photography titled “Timeless: Photography of Rowland Scherman.” Jones retired as a full-time faculty member from UMass Lowell in 2014 after serving as director of the Legal Studies program for many years and instructing undergraduate and graduate students for over three decades. He continues to teach as a professor emeritus in the fields of sports, entertainment, media and art law.
