“Welcome Beck” Thursdays, hosted by the English and Journalism departments, presents essayist Connie Schultz and Torie Clarke in conversation. This weekly online series connects Denisonians and the general public with acclaimed writers and reporters.
Schultz is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and professional-in-residence in the journalism school at Kent State University. She is the author of two memoirs, “Life Happens” and “…And His Lovely Wife,” as well as a novel, “The Daughters of Erietown.” Schultz lives in Cleveland with her husband, Senator Sherrod Brown, and their rescue dogs, Franklin and Walter. They have four children and seven grandchildren.
Clarke is the host of the podcast “Chatter on Books.” A longtime Washington hand, her career includes a stint as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. She is a regular on The Tony Kornheiser Show and author of “Lisptick on a Pig” and “A Survivor’s Guide to Washington.” She also serves on the Senior Advisory Committee of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics.
In this talk, Schultz and Clarke discuss Schultz’s new novel The Daughters of Erietown. They also talk about the importance of voting, the political process (what’s good about it), and how important literature is in a moment like this. Read more in The Denisonian here.
Our “Welcome Beck” Thursdays events are part of the Beck Series, the virtual reading series of Denison University, highlighting the best in fiction, poetry, journalism, and scholarship. This event is funded by the Harriet Ewens Beck Endowment, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a gift by alumna Sue Douthit O’Donnell, ‘67.
