Denison University’s Department of Philosophy and the Titus-Hepp Lecture Series welcomes Margret Grebowicz from the University of Tyumen presenting “Are We Interesting?”
The history of our attempts to communicate with large, intelligent animals shows an ongoing investment in the idea that they are interested in speaking to humans. But is this true? And furthermore, does interest wane with the presence of new communications technologies, which arguably contribute to ever greater social attrition and bodily alienation? In other words, are we still interesting?
Grebowicz teaches at the School of Advanced Studies, University of Tyumen, in Western Siberia. Her research concerns environmental imagination, especially the role of desire in conservation, and animal studies, especially megafauna and interspecies communication. Her most recent book is “Whale Song” (Bloomsbury, 2017).
