The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Charles Exley, associate professor wonder Japanese literature at the University of Pittsburgh, and Michael Tangeman, associate professor of modern Japanese literature at Denison, presenting “Behind the Scenes of the Crime: Translating Japanese Mysteries.”
Exley and Tangeman will take the audience into the minds of two translators as they discuss some of the intricacies of translating Japanese popular fiction (in this case, mysteries) for the anthology they edited — “Old Crimes New Scenes: A Century of Innovations in Japanese Mystery Fiction.” They will share with the rationale behind selection of the works included in the anthology, the frustrations of thinking in two languages simultaneously, and the reason why Exley came to learn about 19th-century Japanese wig-making for this project.
Their presentation will be given in English.
