The Horizon Fund was established in 2009 by 161 members of the Denison Class of 1959 as they celebrated their 50th anniversary reunion. The Horizon Fund is a permanent endowment to help fund important opportunities for students. In particular, the annual income from the fund will support students who seek curricular or co-curricular learning experiences. The Fund may be used to pay expenses associated with internships, study abroad, student initiatives, academic or professional development conference registration and travel, service experiences and field study. The Fund may be used for individual and group experiences for which there are separate applications and funding guidelines.
In spring/summer 2016, three students used the Horizon Fund monies to do interesting global experiences. Yusuf Ahmed '16 (Communication and International Studies) spent spring break in Jordan with the nongovernmental organization I DARE working on issues of sustainable development and conflict resolution. Sarah Lopez '17 (Psychology and Educational Studies with a concentration in Queer Studies) is spending summer 2016 working with Project Favela in Brazil.
Volunteers with Project Favela teach young children in the poorest parts of Rio, the favelas. And Samantha McLaughlin '19 (English Writing and Art History and Visual Culture) is doing a July 2016 educational experience through the Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center is Auschwitz, Poland.
Each of these students benefitted from the generosity of Denison alumni to enable these great global experiences.
