September 25, 2023
The International studies program is happy to announce the 11 Junior and Senior Fellows selected for this academic year. This is the largest group of fellows on record. They are recognized as students who identify processes and make connections in the classroom, but also develop connections among individuals, communities, and groups in their co-curricular encounters. Fellowship recipients act as ambassadors for the program, assisting with departmental gatherings, guest speakers, and events.
International Studies with a focus on Southeast/East Asian relations
Hometown:
Hanoi, Vietnam
Xin chao! My name is Mai Dang and I am an international student from Hanoi, Vietnam.
I had the opportunity to solidify and expand my interests in the East Asian area when I studied abroad in London. It was great to access a wide range of sources in SOAS - a university with a vibrant International Relations and East Asian Studies program.
On campus, I am heavily involved in VSA (Vietnamese Student Association) and DASU (Denison Asian Student Union). I love being a part of the C3 (cross-cultural community) family and attending their social and cultural events. I also love music and dancing so you can find me at the DuWop acapella group and DKDG (Denison K-pop Dance Group)
I expanded my Arabic skills while attending SIT’s Geopolitics of the Middle East study abroad program in Amman, Jordan last spring. Having such an immersive experience allowed me to develop my knowledge and understanding of my interests in international affairs, Arabic, and the Islamic world. Over the summer I interned at the Envision Consulting Group in Amman, Jordan
My name is Manning and my focus in international studies is on Catalan separatist politics in the post-Francisco Franco era. At Denison, I am a member of Club Rugby, Club Soccer and have participated in Chamber Singers. I studied abroad last summer in Barcelona, Spain through IAU. There I lived in a homestay and loved learning more about Spanish culture. I traveled on the weekends, took classes on the weekdays, and played as much soccer as I could! After Denison, I plan to work in Burlington, VT as a Paralegal, and pursue a law degree a year or two later
Anthropology & Sociology and International Studies
Xin chào, my name is Minh Tran, a senior from the beautiful country of Vietnam. I spent spring semester of my Junior year studying abroad at SOAS, a great school for social science, in the heart of London, U.K. As you can imagine, moving from Granville to London was a big leap filled with exciting and wonderful experiences. I got to explore London and the U.K. along with their “world-renowned” cuisine to the fullest and make incredible friends. Post-graduation, I would like to pursue a higher degree, continuing my research in the relations between genders and the construction of nationalism
Economics, International Studies and Global Commerce
Hometown:
Kolkata, India
Hi, I’m Aditi! I’m an international student from India
During the summer of 2023, I was a research assistant to Professor Isis Nusair. Our research endeavors centered around examining immigration and integration policies in both the United States and the Middle East. Additionally, I had the privilege to collaborate on editing one of her books focusing on feminist collaborations. I’m really looking forward to going to Qatar in Summer 2024. I’ll be studying the relationship between globalization and Qatari nationalism through the lens of the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar
International Studies dual concentration in Middle East & North African Studies and Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Music Minor
Hometown:
St Louis, Missouri
I love the world outside the Midwest just as much as the one in it. I speak English, Spanish, French, and Arabic all at an intermediate level or higher. I found my passion for language and travel when I took a service trip to Costa Rica, and I now excitedly seek out every opportunity to experience a world outside my own. This past summer, I studied abroad at the Sijal Institute in Amman Jordan, and loved every second of it
International Studies and Environmental Studies with a concentration in Global Environmental Justice
I was born in Bangladesh, but currently live in Ohio. I like to hike, paint, listen to music, and travel. On campus I am involved in DCGA, MSA, SAC and I’m also a Global Ambassador for the Office for Global Programs. I know 6 languages. I plan on studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany in the spring of 2024!
I am Brazilian, but I grew up in South Africa, and later moved to the United States.
On campus, I work as an office assistant in the ENVS department; I am a brother of the Beta Zeta Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and the former vice president of La Fuerza Latina. Outside of work and involvements, I love playing tennis, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and eating good food!
My international background has largely contributed to my academic interests, and, furthermore, my interest in researching climate change. I plan to study abroad in the Spring of ’24 in Iceland through the SIT program called “Climate Change and the Arctic.”
Anthropology & Sociology and International Studies with a focus on obstetric violence in Spain
Over the summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work in New York City with Education First, where I served as an orientation leader. My role involved guiding and supporting groups of international students coming from Europe and Asia to the United States for a high school exchange program. At Denison, I work in the Admissions Office as a Special Events Coordinator and Docent. Outside of work and involvement on campus, I enjoy doing puzzles with my friends and watching baseball games (Go Phillies!).
