Introducing the 2024-25 International studies fellows
International studies fellows are active ambassadors throughout the year.
November 12, 2024
International studies fellowship recipients help organize, promote, and speak at events sponsored by the program. They are chosen by the faculty, who select five seniors and five juniors to act as ambassadors and leaders among international studies majors. Some of their accomplishments include:
Presenting study abroad slides and details about international studies focus areas at a “Global Insights” luncheon for underclassmen.
Helping to design posters and organize the “Majors Connect” event in early October, which included appetizers, slides, handouts, and door prizes.
Holding a kick-off party in October for the 20th Annual International Studies Film Festival, which runs through the academic year. Since the October and November films are science fiction, the refreshments included “yokai” dinosaur cookies and “radioactive” Jell-o.
Congratulations and many thanks to our 2024-25 fellows:
I am a Brazilian-South African. Although I was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, both my parents are from Brazil. My passion for international studies comes from my upbringing within multiple cultures.
Here at Denison, I am the president of the Multicultural Greek Council, vice president of the Beta Zeta Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and a member of La Fuerza Latina. During the spring of 2024, I studied abroad in Iceland, where I researched environmental populism in Icelandic politics. During the summer, I worked as a policy intern for the Ohio Environmental Council. In my free time, I enjoy watching anime and going out with friends!
I grew up in South Korea until I came here to study at Denison. In my international studies major, I am focusing on NATO and the Ukraine war. I am examining how the war is changing the security of Europe and affecting NATO’s policies. I did my study abroad program in Switzerland in the spring semester of 2024, diving deeper into peace and security studies as well as the multilateral relationships of the nations.
On campus, I work in the International Studies Office and Eisner Center. In my free time, I love to listen to music and watch movies and short clips. I also occasionally work out and hang out with my friends. I love traveling, so my time in Switzerland was a great opportunity to enjoy all the nature and cities in Europe.
International studies, with a Middle-East North Africa concentration
Hometown:
St. Louis, Missouri
I’m a proud Midwesterner. Language is one of my biggest passions. I can speak Spanish, French, and Arabic well. I love to travel and will never forget studying abroad in Amman, Jordan, two summers ago. On top of cultural studies, I have found a true love for broadcasting. I work at a nearby local radio station in Newark and serve as a DJ for the Doobie on campus. Additionally, I am a big sports fan and like to create content for it; I post on a blog site and host a podcast, sharing my love for sports across the internet. You will often find me around campus outside or in the gym, as I love being active and enjoying nature; otherwise, I spend time making music in the Eisner Center.
International studies and environmental studies, with a minor in PPA
Hometown:
Dublin, Ohio
I was born in Bangladesh but moved to the U.S. when I was 5 years old. Some of my hobbies are drawing and painting and hanging out with friends. I also love to read all and any types of books.
In the spring of 2024, I studied abroad in Freiburg, Germany, which was a life-changing experience. My program was called the European Union, so Europe was truly our classroom. Courses examined European Union politics and laws. We observed the economics that structured the welfare state and also studied the E.U. elections that took place last June. We had the opportunity to travel to different E.U. countries, including the parliament and commission buildings in Strasbourg, France, and Belgium. I love traveling, so that was a fantastic part of the program for me. One fun fact about me is that I know six languages.
International studies and economics with a financial economics concentration
Hometown:
Islamabad, Pakistan
Growing up, I learned five different languages. I love playing squash and watching cricket, and I am currently involved with Denison’s Economics Club and DISA, the Denison International Student Association.
During my junior year, I studied in London, at Queen Mary University near the heart of the city. My courses examined international relations, development politics, and identity formation in urban spaces. While abroad, I traveled through the United Kingdom and also took a spring break trip to Istanbul, Turkey.
I aspire to work in international aid after graduation. This fall, I am studying abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France, through the Institute for American Universities Social Sciences and Humanities Program. I chose this program because I was interested in living in a smaller European city where I could practice my French while taking courses in both social sciences and cultural studies.
Outside of academics, I am a lifeguard with the Ocean City Beach Patrol in Ocean City, Maryland, and I am also a member of the Denison track and field team.
International studies and Spanish, with a concentration in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
Hometown:
Princeton, New Jersey
I am passionate about civil rights and reforming the immigration system. This summer, I gained valuable experience as an intern for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where I handled cases of workplace discrimination. I am excited to be studying migration in Mexico in the spring of 2025!
On campus, I work for the Academic Resource Center and the Center for Global Programs, and I am a TA for the Spanish department. Outside of school, I enjoy thrifting and listening to music!
I was born in Maryland and raised in Accra. I’m passionate about art and creativity, recently exploring pottery as a new hobby and enjoying visits to art galleries. This past summer, I gained valuable experience working as a foundation intern at the KGL Foundation. This semester, I’m continuing my work as a student wellness ambassador at Hoaglin and remotely with Princeton in Africa. I’m also thrilled to share that I’ll be studying abroad in the U.K. this spring!
International studies and German, with a minor in women and gender studies
Hometown:
Buffalo, New York
On campus, I am the president of the Ballroom Buzzards ballroom dance club, an Academic Resource Center tutor, an admissions docent, and a member of the Student Alumni Council.
In the spring, I plan to study abroad in Munich, Germany, with the immersion program JYM Munich. I look forward to improving my German skills and gaining insights about reproductive rights and discourse in Germany, which is also relevant to my capstone project/interest. In my free time, I love to work out, listen to music, dance, and hang out with friends.
International studies and women and gender studies, with a concentration in public health
Hometown:
Midway, Kentucky
I work as an office assistant for the International Studies Program on campus and as an intern with Developing Radio Partners — a nonprofit focused on media development — as a new business development associate.
I also work as an ambulatory veterinary technician. After spending the summer of 2024 in Washington, D.C., interning in international affairs, I’m excited to study global health and development policy in Switzerland in the spring of 2025, where I will be immersed in French.
Mentoring by faculty & professionals Columbus gave Sara Abou Rashed ’21 the confidence to create a one-woman show about her experience as an immigrant.
