The International Studies Program is proud of all the work and advocacy our Junior and Senior Fellows did this year. Everyone jumped in to assist with the Fall Festival, speakers, virtual events and also promoted our annual film festival. The social event with off-campus study on March 2nd was fabulous.
International Studies major, Middle East and North Africa concentration
Hometown:
Columbus, Ohio
My name is Dulcie Heyes and I’m from Columbus, Ohio! I’m a senior majoring in International Studies with an academic concentration on the Middle East and North Africa. On campus, I am a 4-year member of the varsity women’s soccer team, a co-founder and the editor-in-chief for UNCUT On The Hill and an assistant Arabic teacher. This past semester I spent 4 months studying abroad in Amman, Jordan, living with a Jordanian host family. Over the course of my time there, I was able to significantly improve my Arabic language skills. One of the best parts about living in Jordan this past spring was experiencing Ramadan and participating in celebrations with my family. Post-graduation, I plan to live abroad, possibly by teaching English and eventually pursuing a career involving linguistics, such as translation.
International Studies major, Environmental and Women and Gender concentration
Hometown:
Highland Park, IL
Namaste, my name is Sawyer! I am an International Studies major concentrating on environmental as well as women and gender issues. I am from Highland Park, IL, and I studied abroad in Nepal through SIT Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change. My favorite part of the program was the month-long independent research project near the Himalayas. During this process, I learned about Nepali music and rural ways of life from incredibly kind villagers; afterward, I wrote and performed songs inspired by my time there! On campus, I live on the Homestead where I work to align my environmental beliefs with my actions. Additionally, I am co-president of the Food Recovery Network, which rescues leftover food from the dining hall and gives it to people in need. After graduation, I hope to organize, resist, and agitate to tackle oppressive systems.
Hi, I’m Sophia and I’m an International Studies and French major. I’m originally from Hamburg, Germany, but moved to the United States when I was ten. My favorite part about Denison is the fact that the professors care about their students and that the atmosphere on campus is very welcoming. I chose International Studies because I’m interested in doing something where I can encounter many different cultures and ways of thinking. This gives me the opportunity to focus on topics that interest me while still studying through a global framework. I spent my Junior Year in France where I was able to improve my French skills as well as do an internship. I enjoyed my off-campus experience and believed that I became more independent during my time in France. I’m looking forward to teaching in Spain after graduation because I will also be able to learn more about the country and the language.
International Studies with Cinema major, English Creative Writing minor
Hi! My name is Kathleen Amiet and I am a senior double majoring in International Studies with Cinema and minor in English Creative Writing. On campus, I am Station Manager of the Doobie Radio station and have a show where I talk about pop culture + international media (music, film, etc). I studied abroad the summer before my senior year in Denmark and Sweden, where I learned about migration, topics around food, and postcolonial identity. I really loved the music scene in Stockholm; I lived a block away from a record store! I also got to make a travelogue video about food when I was abroad as part of my Gilman Scholarship.
Economics and International Studies major, Post-Soviet Eurasia concentration
I’m a senior double majoring in Economics and International Studies with a concentration in Post-Soviet Eurasia. I was born in Tajikistan and partially grew up there before coming to the US. I first moved to Washington, and then to Ohio. Here at Denison, I work several jobs and take part in various organizations. I am the events chair for Denison International Students Associations, I work as a Global Ambassador, I’m an office intern at the Center for Global Programs, and I’m a facilities associate at the Mitchell Center. Outside of work and involvement, I love playing soccer with friends and learning about different languages and cultures. As of now I am fluent in English, Russian, and Farsi, however I’m also learning Spanish on the side. Fortunately, I was able to improve my Spanish skills immensely this past summer, while interning in Barcelona, Spain!
History, International Studies, and Music Composition major
Hometown:
Cincinnati, Ohio
I’m Ali, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, majoring in History, International Studies, and Music Composition. INTL100 with Dr. Baker drew me into the major; it was an incredible way to start International Studies. I’m looking into future internships and may do another archaeological dig. Last summer a team from Denison did a three-week dig in Ireland (my photo is from the site on a tiny island). I may pursue something music-oriented as I try to figure out how best to use the time I have left before graduating. If you see me on campus and have any questions about anything—Denison, International Studies, or anything else—feel free to stop me. I love getting to know new people and I’m always happy to help people find answers to their questions!
Anthropology and Sociology, and International Studies major
Hometown:
Vietnam
Hi! I’m Minh Tran, a junior from Vietnam. I am double majoring in Anthropology and Sociology, and International Studies with a focus on gender and the construction of nationalism in Southeast Asia. On Denison’s campus, I am a student worker in the International Studies office, an Academic Resource Center tutor, a Global Ambassador for Global Programs, a member of RedTech’s media team, and a librarian in the ANSO library. I’m also involved in VSA (Vietnamese Students Association) and Denison Amnesty International. I will be in London the spring of 2023 studying at SOAS for my off-campus study experience.
International Studies and Economics major, Middle East and North African Studies concentration
Hometown:
Dayton, Ohio
My name is Henry Jenks, and I am a Junior from Dayton, Ohio. I am majoring in International Studies and Economics. I also have a concentration in Middle East and North African Studies. I am planning on studying abroad in Amman, Jordan during the Spring of ‘23. I have taken four semesters of Arabic at Denison, reaching the Intermediate II level. My favorite part of the INTL major is the ability to dive into really specific topics through my research while still learning global themes.
Mentoring by faculty & professionals Columbus gave Sara Abou Rashed ’21 the confidence to create a one-woman show about her experience as an immigrant.
