A juried student photography exhibition for the “Confronting Climate Change through Photography” class will be held Friday, April 12, at 4:30pm, in the Knapp Performance Space.
During the “Confronting Climate Change through Photography” class, students visited five central Ohio facilities that represent (though may not typify) the main anthropogenic sources of climate change. The students took many photographs, talked with the hosts, and also made sound recordings of the sites. They submitted their best visual work to an outside juror for consideration.
The juror - artist and OSU senior art professor, Michael Mercil - has selected 40 images from the students’ submissions, which all reflect different dimensions of their creative efforts to better understand climate change and their own role in environmental processes.
The opening will include a somewhat formal program (starting around 4:45, probably for 35-40 minutes) that includes comments from the juror, a short memorial ceremony, quick statements from the student artists, and a set of four brief musical performances by ETHEL.
The ETHEL members have worked with the students to compose pieces based on the sound recordings captured during our site visits (and they came with us on our field trip to the power plant that provides electricity for central Ohio). The exhibition will be a multi-media, multi-sensory affair. It will also be catered - light hors d’oeuvres available. After the program, there will be time for artists and visitors to mingle, and for everyone to enjoy the artwork.
