Discussing and exchanging knowledge among faculty and peers is one of the key methods of learning in a liberal arts education. Symposiums, organized especially for this purpose, are particularly effective within academic disciplines. Scholars can deeply explore the particular themes of their research with those who can understand and offer salient critique.
The Department of Art History and Visual Culture has created these unique opportunities in its annual senior/junior symposiums for 35 years. The 2024 symposium, held on April 26 in the Bryant Art Center, was moderated by professor and chair of the department Catherine Stuer. Friends and family were invited to share conversation and refreshments at the event’s conclusion.
The symposium featured a presentation of research in progress by Catlin August Cornish ’24, who discussed period drama and caregiver/gender roles. Junior presenters Yuanyu Ma ’25, Lydia Maynor ’25, and Sodahny Sip ’25 presented topics ranging from gender in anime to the work of artist Kara Walker.
