Columbus, Ohio—Denison University alumni Peter B. and Janet Waugh Halliday ‘59 have been chosen to be honored on Tuesday, Nov. 25, for their outstanding contributions to the community through generosity, volunteerism, and leadership in philanthropic efforts. The Association of Fundraising Professionals’ annual awards program recognizes outstanding achievement by individual, foundation and corporate philanthropists, fundraising volunteers and professional fundraisers.
This year’s Leave a Legacy award honors the Hallidays for leading lives of philanthropy and service, and for their intentionality in repaying the institutions that shaped their lives by leaving legacy gifts. This award is presented annually by the Central Ohio Planned Giving Council and is one of the most anticipated awards of the luncheon event.
Peter and Janet met their second day of their college career at Denison University and began their public service through class and fraternal leadership. They were married in 1959, and over the next 55 years were active in service to community, church, and education. Janet served on the Boards of Denison, the Junior League of Columbus, Bexley Education Foundation, The Franklin Park Conservatory, Dawes Arboretum, and Franklin Park Conservatory. Peter served on the Grant Hospital Board, Battelle Youth Scholars, Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Homes, as well as the Whitehall Bexley Rotary Club.
Together, Peter and Janet founded the Bexley Heritage Fund, which later became the Bexley Community Foundation. Though the Hallidays consider their greatest legacy their three children, their spouses, and their six grandchildren, they also leave a considerable mark through planned gifts to organizations that span from Columbus to Sanibel, Florida.
The Hallidays have left major legacy gifts with The Columbus Foundation to benefit Denison University, Bexley Community Foundation, The Bexley Education Foundation, Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Sanibel United Church of Christ, and the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village.
Celebrations have been held in hundreds of communities across the globe annually since the official National Philanthropy Day©, November 15th, was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.
