Possibly the best-known magazine that engages in college rankings, U.S. News & World Report, consistently places Denison in the top tier of its Best National Liberal Arts Colleges list. This year, Denison University maintained its top-tier position, placed at No. 55, one of only four Ohio colleges to be recognized in the top 100..
The 2016 U.S. News ranking, published in “Best Colleges 2016,” defines the “nation’s best 244 liberal arts colleges” as those that “emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half their degrees in the liberal arts.” Denison’s strong academic reputation, quality of professors and selectivity for admission perennially places the college in the top ranks of national liberal arts institutions.
“We are pleased that the quality of a Denison education is valued so highly,” says Denison University President Adam Weinberg. “Denison is among the very top liberal arts and sciences institutions in the country. This ranking by U.S. News & World Report is an endorsement of our relevant and challenging curriculum, our smart and talented students, and our dedicated and accomplished faculty, who, by any measure, are among the very best in America when it comes to teaching and mentoring undergraduates.”
Denison’s attributes, including its 9-to-1 student-faculty ratio, the large number of classes with fewer than 20 students, and its highly selective acceptance rate are factors in the college’s high placement of rankings.
Other similar college rankings, which also consistently place Denison in the upper echelons of U.S. liberal arts institutions, include Forbes, which places Denison in its “Top 100,” and Princeton Review, which places Denison on its list of “Best Colleges” and “Best Value Colleges.” In addition, Denison has been included in every edition of Loren Pope’s influential higher education book, “Colleges That Change Lives.”
The U.S. News & World Report college rankings are based on a methodology that includes selectivity, first-year retention rates, graduation rates, class size, the academic profile of entering students, student-faculty ratio, faculty support, alumni giving rates, peer and high school counselor reputational assessments, and more.
