William Mobley, visiting chair and professor of management at the Asia Pacific Academy of Economics and Management, University of Macau in China, has devoted his life’s work to the development and effectiveness of leaders and organizations. His work on motivation, leadership and organizational culture has been published in leading journals and is a reflection of his long and varied career in management and education. In recognition of his work, Mobley, a member of the Denison University class of 1963, was recently honored by his alma mater with an alumni citation, the highest honor bestowed upon a graduate or friend of the college.
Mobley has served as corporate manager of human resources research and succession planning for PPG Industries; professor of management and director of the Center for Management and Organizational Research at the University of South Carolina; professor of management, dean of the College of Business, president, and now president emeritus of Texas A & M University; and served as chancellor of the Texas A & M University System. He has served as Senior Fulbright Professor at National Taiwan University; a visiting fellow at Cornell University; a visiting professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and honorary professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. From 2002 to 2009 he served as professor of management at China Europe International School, and he was named the first professor emeritus there.
Executive editor of Advances in Global Leadership, Emerald Publishing, Mobley is a registered organizational psychologist in Hong Kong; a fellow of the American Psychological Association, SIOP and APS; and a member of the Academy of Management and the International Association for Applied Psychology.
He has resided in Hong Kong and Shanghai for the last 16 years. Mobley previously founded the Hong Kong based Global Research Consortia; launched the PDI Global Research Consortium offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai and was chief executive officer of PDI A/P. For the past eight years, he has led his own executive assessment and coaching firm, Mobley Group Pacific Ltd., as well as serving as managing director of William Global Partners Ltd., which provides support for China start-up ventures. He previously served on President George H. W. Bush’s Commission on Minority Business Development and was a delegate to the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council.
Mobley received his doctorate from the University of Maryland-College Park in 1971 and his master’s from the University of Maryland-Baltimore in 1969. He resides in Shanghai and Macau with his wife, Dr. Marjorie J. Woo.
