The Ohio Mu Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon of Denison University is proud to announce the sponsorship of an endowed scholarship in honor of three of its alumni. The scholarship benefits Denison students whose “academic, leadership, and philanthropic performance exemplifies the standards and principles of SAE.”
The Moshier-Riddle-Huchison Scholarship was created in conjunction with the recent transfer of ownership of the SAE house to Denison University and recognizes the late Malcolm J. Moshier ’37, the late James S. Riddle ’43, and James P. Huchison ’33 of Dayton, Ohio.
The award will be made annually to a young man or woman who represents the values and standards of SAE. When appropriate, special consideration for the award may be given to legacies of members of the Ohio Mu Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The first recipient is Craig McClelland ’12, a first-year student from Berea, Ohio. Craig is the nephew of SAE Eric Peterson ’78.
The Ohio Mu Chapter was established at Denison in 1919, with the chapter house originally located off-campus in Granville. The fraternity moved “up the hill” when the new house was constructed on the North Quad (Fraternity Row) in 1952, then expanded in 1967-68 with the addition of a new residential wing and the signature white-pillared portico. Coincident with the end of residential fraternities, SAE, like most of the fraternities, used the lower level of the building as the fraternity lodge while the upper floors were leased to Denison as a dormitory. The lodge remained in use until the Ohio Mu chapter became inactive in 2001. With the transfer of the building title and the establishment of the scholarship, the former chapter house is being renamed “Moshier Huchison House,” and will continue to be used for student housing.
“The name of the house and the scholarship honor Denison’s finest SAE alumni leaders,” said Ohio Mu Alumni Board President Tony Brice ’82. “These men exemplified the virtues of The True Gentleman, the foundation upon which our fraternity was founded. It was their leadership that made both the house and scholarship possible.” Vice President for Finance and Management Seth Patton, commenting on the house corporation’s choice of names, noted that Moshier, Riddle, and Huchison “served the SAE chapter with distinction for many years…and were loyal Denison alumni in many, many ways.”

Moshier, who passed away in 2000, built a successful insurance and financial planning business in the Cleveland area. Riddle, who died in 2005, was a human resources manager for General Electric in northern Ohio Jim Huchison, a certified public accountant, is retired from the accounting firm he founded in the presidency and other offices of SAF’s House Corporation Board, and all three were recipients of a number of SAE awards, including the fraternity’s Merit Key Award, one of the organization’s highest honors. Huchison recalled that he and Moshier worked together on financial matters for the fraternity, including the financing of the SAE house in the early 1950s. He commented that he is honored that the house will bear his and Moshier’s names. “I have many fine memories of years of association with the fraternity,” he said, “and with my fellow SAEs.”
