Perhaps it is sheer terror that forces many Denison seniors to embark on their career searches; for others, it is the unquenchable desire to succeed and conquer the workforce. No
matter the reason, the journey into the real world is no less daunting, and most eventually converge on the Career Services Office to begin their research for their future jobs. With the aid of that office’s staff, many seniors capture the attention of outside companies through interviews, detailed resumés, and polished cover letters that boast and shine with intellectual achievement and promise. In some cases, the impression has been so great that several companies visit Denison yearly to recruit the best and brightest for the next generation of their organizations.
“Many of these companies who make the trip to Denison see a spark in students that is unique to the school,” says Ryan Brechbill, associate director of career services. “Recruiters are willing to go to bat for these students to be hired by their companies, and they remain strong advocates of what Denison has to offer.” Brechbill works with many of these companies to conduct mock and real interviews, workshops, and other activities that open the doors of employment for students.
John McCue, a partner in Cleveland’s Deloitte Consulting office, agrees on the great potential of Denison students. “We come because of the very discipline and particular logic taught here. Denison students are very methodical and are usually able to convert data into solutions, a necessary quality of our company’s employees.” Even though a liberal arts degree is less about quantitative thinking, says McCue, Denison challenges a student to interact and adapt, a trait he noticed during his October visit to campus. “There’s a sharp, young wit here that can definitely move a company forward.”
