What is Otherworld?
It’s an immersive art experience that uses every inch of its 32,000 square feet and 47 rooms for large-scale interactive art. The experience is the brainchild of 40 different artists—with expertise ranging from computer programming to metalworking and sculpting to digital fabrication. It’s not like any museum you’ve ever been to. It’s a bonafide science fiction playground, where you’re encouraged to touch, climb, and crawl through the art.
It’s amazing in every sense of the word. And it’s no surprise Otherworld was named one of America’s Best New Attractions by Thrillist or that it was featured in a New York Times article about the resurgence of Columbus.
Arriving at Otherworld—What to Expect
As you pull into a nondescript parking lot in what amounts to an abandoned shopping center, you’re not sure you’re in the right place. But then you see the ultra-modern Otherworld logo come into view. The location is oddly fitting—a blank canvas for Otherworld’s futuristic experience. After you buy a ticket and get a wristband (which is good all day—they have many repeat visitors), you’re on your own. There’s no guided tour, no map, no right way to explore the fantastical world
they’ve created.
Exploring Otherworld: Entering a New Dimension
As you set off on your adventure, you enter the domain of Otherworld Industries, which the creators call “a pioneering tech company specializing in alternate realm tourism,” where alien flora, primordial creatures, and expanses of abstract light and geometry overwhelm your senses.
In one room, you walk through neon spider webs. In another, fuzzy material covers the floors and walls, and a giant, rainbow narwhal invites you to crawl inside. In what feels like the center of the experience, a giant tree of life glows with brightly colored, ever-changing orbs. Walking through mirrored corridors filled with pulsating neon lights, you can’t help but record the exponential versions of yourself making faces or moving limbs in the mirrors. It goes on and on—an exciting maze of mind-bending experiences.
Uncovering the Surprises of Otherworld
You couldn’t take in all Otherworld has to offer in one visit if you tried. There are too many hidden gems and secret passageways. These are just a few:
• In one tucked away room, your heat signature produces a neon shadow that follows you around wherever you go.
• In the center room, you can compose your own rhythm of beats and pulses by swiping your hands through what look like stalactites.
• In an orange-lit room, you’re greeted by lifesize Dia de los Muertos dolls who, when you take their photo with flash, transform to full color.
But reading about Otherworld isn’t enough—you have to enter this new dimension yourself.
