Two new members joined Denison’s board of trustees in July, and John Faraci, an 11-year member of the board, assumed the chair. Faraci replaces Tom Hoaglin ’71, who completed his five-year term as chair. Hoaglin will continue to serve as a trustee.
John Faraci, Jr. ’72
Chair
Faraci is the recently retired chairman and chief executive officer of International Paper. He served previously as president, executive vice president, and chief financial officer. He also has served as vice president and general manager of Masonite; vice president of the coated paper, bristols, and converting papers business; and chief executive officer and managing director of Carter Holt Harvey. Faraci served as chairman of the U.S.-Brazil CEO Forum and on the board of the National Park Foundation. He sits on many boards, including those of United Technologies Corp., PPG, and The American Enterprise Institute; he also serves as chairman of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has served Denison as a President’s Associates volunteer.
Jeremy Flug ’83
Alumni-Nominated Trustee
Flug is co-chairman of Gulftech International, a group of four privately held companies that design, manufacture, and lease food processing machinery. Prior to joining Gulftech in 1999, Flug was a senior vice president with Smith Barney & Co. and a vice president with Kidder Peabody & Co. Flug founded Baseball Fantasy Camp for Kids (BBFCK), a nonprofit that offers children with physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in a one-day fantasy camp with Major League Baseball players. Flug is a trustee of The Kent Denver School and the Clyfford Still Museum. Flug has served Denison on Alumni Council, as national Annual Fund chair in 2011-13, as a member of the President’s Leadership Council, as a President’s Associates volunteer, and as a career advisor.
Carlos Maciel Neto ’14
Recent Student Trustee
Maciel was the captain of the national championship men’s swimming & diving team from 2011 to 2014 and actively represented the team on the Denison Student Athletic Advisory Council. He served as a head resident for two years, earning the “Commitment to the Department” award, and also served on the Ad Hoc Committee for Alcohol and Its Effects—a group responsible for drafting new policies that significantly decreased alcohol-related incidents on campus. Maciel was a three-time recipient of the James T. Glerum, Jr. Top-50 Student Athlete award, a recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award, and a President’s Medalist. He is pursuing a master’s degree in economic theory and policy at the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College.
Stephen Polk ’78
Trustee
Polk is president and CEO of Highgate, LLC. a private investment company. His business career began in 1981 with R. L. Polk & Co., where he served as chairman, president, and CEO from 2000 to 2013, when the family business was sold to IHS. Polk is vice chairman of the board of trustees of the Cranbrook Educational Community, vice president/director for the Detroit Zoological Society, and he sits on several boards, including the boards of the Automotive Hall of Fame, Beaumont Hospitals, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Fifth Third Bank of Southeast Michigan. He has served Denison as an Organizational Studies volunteer, a class reunion volunteer, and as a member of his reunion gift committee. He received the Alumni Citation in 2013. His son, Ryan, is a member of the Class of 2017.
