Denison University provides online resources to students, faculty and staff for many purposes ranging from education and research to communications and entertainment. The costs associated with operating a large volume network are part of the general operating expenses. By using online resources wisely and respectfully, we can contain costs and provide more secure services for the Denison community.
All users of the Denison network and associated systems are subject to the same rules, embodied in the Acceptable Use Policy. Residential network users may not operate servers, wireless access points or other shared services, as these often have adverse effects on performance and security. Students who operate such systems will have their residential network connection interrupted until the offending system is deactivated.
- Information Technology Services reserves the right to interrupt network service at any time if it determines that a violation of copyright law has occurred or if a student is consuming a disproportionate share of network resources in a way that affects general network performance.
- Access to student systems may be interrupted by Information Technology Services at any time.
- Students will be held responsible for all violations of federal and state law and Denison Acceptable Use Policies that originate from their systems.
- Any use of Denison's network for commercial purposes, violation of copyright law, or other violation of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in immediate termination of access until the offending material is removed.
- Under normal circumstances, systems will be accessible only from on-campus locations.
Bandwidth Management
Bandwidth is a technical term for network capacity. Every network has limits on its capacity, especially where the local network connects to the Internet. Even though Denison has a very fast Internet connection, that connection and its bandwidth are a limited resource that everyone on campus must share. A person who consumes a disproportionate amount of bandwidth and prevents other people from using network services is a bandwidth hog.
It is possible for even a few users to completely consume the network resources. The use of streaming media programs can make you a bandwidth hog. These programs can very easily consume all of the bandwidth on Denison's connection to the Internet. The university maintains technical controls, such as firewalls and traffic shapers, to limit this type of abuse. The current controls prevent the saturation of the Internet connection and enable us to more equitably share bandwidth.
Any use of Denison's network for commercial purposes, violation of copyright law, or other violation of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in immediate termination of off-campus access to the student's server for the remainder of the academic year.
For more information about streaming media programs and the risk of using them, see the Peer-to-Peer Usage Guide.
