Global Studies Seminar welcomes Charles St-Georges, assistant professor, presenting “The Modernized Myth and Mythical Modernity: Mexican Horror Films, Race, and the Socioeconomic Status Quo.” St-Georges will analyze the relevance of the top-grossing Mexican film of 2007 was Kilometer 31, a horror film in which the mythical figure of La Llorona is retold in terms that reinscribe Mexico’s socioeconomic status quo, which is traditionally historicized as an inevitable result of the racial(ized) hierarchies that defined the country’s three-centuries-long colonial period.
