The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Awad Halabi presenting “From Coup d’états to Alliances: The US Involvement in the Middle East Since WWII.” This talk examines the larger trends that have characterized US involvement in the Middle East since WWII, such as maintaining access to oil in the region and preventing the Soviet Union from gaining a presence in the area. These larger interests have shaped how the US has engaged with questions of democracy in the Middle East, such as at time sponsoring coup d’états and other times forging alliances with monarchies and dictators. Halabi is an associate professor serving in the departments of history and religion at Wright State University specializing in the Middle East and Islam.
