The Global Studies Seminar presents “Crisis in Venezuela: Examining the Controversies and Impacts of the Presidential Election” by Denison University’s Assistant Professor of Economics Pedro Cadenas.

The 2024 Venezuelan presidential election, marked by widespread electoral irregularities, has further deepened the nation’s political and humanitarian crisis. This presentation will explore the key events before, during, and after the election, including electoral fraud, state violence, and political persecution. The analysis will focus on the profound domestic and regional impacts, as well as the economic situation of the country. The talk will conclude by addressing the potential long-term implications for Venezuela’s political landscape and governance.

Cadenas teaches courses on economics and finance. Prior to academia, he accumulated 10 years of professional experience in finance, both at the private and public sectors. His research delves into theory and empirical analysis around risk and decision making, and in history of economic thought. He was born and raised in Venezuela.
