Denison University’s Dance Department, Laura C. Harris Series and Vail Series presents Red Sky Performance is a leading company of contemporary Indigenous performance in Canada and worldwide. Red Sky’s mission is to create inspiring experiences of contemporary Indigenous arts and culture that transform society. The vision of Red Sky Performance derives from its creator Sandra Laronde (Misko Kizhigoo Migizii Kwe) which means “Red Sky Eagle Woman” in the Anishinaaabemowin (Ojibway) language from the Teme-Augama Anishinaabe (People of the Deep Water). Her vision is dedicated to expanding and elevating the ecology of contemporary performance informed by Indigenous worldview and culture.

Trace is a highly kinetic dance about all things traceable. Trace maps the Anishinaabe sky and star stories, offering a glimpse into our origin and future evolution.

Campus and community audiences will be subject to Denison Covid restrictions and guidelines in place at the time.

The Laura C. Harris Series theme for 2021-22, “Imagining Together: Indigenous Activisms & Feminisms,” seeks to deepen our knowledge and campus engagement with complex issues in indigeneity, indigenous feminisms, and indigenous-led approaches to solving pressing global and local problems, including Ohio indigenous histories.

Indigenous scholars and activists point to the gendered impacts of settler colonialism and genocide. These include gender-based and sexualized violence in the forcible displacement of Indigenous peoples from land and natural resources, distortions and deliberate destruction of social structures and kinship networks, and the demonizing and erasure of indigenous ways of knowing and being in the world.
