A Joint Exhibition of the Granville Museum Consortium

“Indigo & Cotton: Chinese Blue and White Cross Stitch in the Denison Museum Collection”

This exhibition, which runs through August 10, 2009 is part of a larger joint exhibition of the Granville Museum Consortium titled “(A)Cross-Stitches: A Joint Exhibition of the Granville Museum Consortium.” Made of indigo thread on ivory cotton and linen and influenced, in part, by Euroamerican contact, these exquisite works of folk art were created by the women of rural China for daily use during the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Dr. Daniel Sheets Dye collected the striking cross-stitch pieces during his 41 years in China and donated them as part of a larger Chinese collection in the 1970’s.
