Denison University’s Vail Series welcomes acclaimed cellist Matt Haimovitz and his brilliant musical variation on the concept of “A Moveable Feast.” He will perform five of the six Bach cello suites, with preludes by renowned contemporary composers, at various locations throughout the Eisner Center and the community.

Bach’s “Suites for Unaccompanied Cello” (1717-1723) are some of the most moving and spiritual compositions for a solo instrument in history. Each suite is a masterpiece on its own, but, in addition to the suites, overtures by Philip Glass, Du Yun, Vijay Iyer, and others are performed.

Haimovitz joins the Denison Symphony Orchestra to complete the cycle, and performs Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major on Thursday, Nov. 21, in Sharon Martin Hall at the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts.

Haimovitz will perform ”A Moveable Feast” in these locations at the times given:

Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: Morning Break with Music 101, Enjoy Coffee and Donuts in Room 238 of the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts (240 West Broadway).
Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 12:30 p.m. -1:30 p.m.: Licking County Community Center Private Friendsgiving Concert at the Licking County Community Center (3825 Columbus Rd).
Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.: Denison Library Lunchtime Listening in the Library Atrium Bring your lunch in the Library (400 West Loop).
Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.: “Pop” Up Concert, Enjoy Bach and Popcorn in the Martha “Gay” Reese Lobby in the 2nd floor hallway of the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts (240 West Broadway).

A student interview about Matt Haimovitz

Michael Morris, the Director of The Vail Series, says Haimovitz is a returning artist at Denison. “He was here in 2012 as a special guest with outstanding chamber orchestra, A Far Cry. Since then he has developed this program, playing the Bach cello suites in various locations around a campus or community. We thought it would be a great way to showcase the Eisner Center, having him play these solo cello pieces at a couple of different locations in the Eisner Center like hallways or lounge areas. And having him featured in the Denison Orchestra concert the last evening of his visit will be a great way to wrap up his residency.”

Haimovitz has been a featured soloist since a very young age. He made his debut in 1984, at the age of 13, as soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic and made his first recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for Deutsche Grammophone, at age 17. He has gone on to perform on the world’s most esteemed stages, with such orchestras and conductors as the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin.

Haimovitz will play the final Bach cello suite as a solo piece on Thursday, November 21 at 7pm, then join the Denison Orchestra for Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. “We just heard the orchestra in the Sharon Martin Hall for the first time in October,” Morris shares, “what an amazing experience! We can’t wait to hear Matt and the Denison Orchestra in this new hall.”
