Farmscape is an immersive, visual exploration of the food system, developing and unpacking challenging research themes through photography. The class explores digital photography both as a visual art form and as a documentary medium. Using the relatively new arena of arts-based research, the students each delved into their explorations through nine different site visits to food system facilities in Ohio. We went to a conventional dairy farm and an Amish/organic dairy farm, a produce distribution center, two meat processing facilities, a grain mill, creamery, greenhouse operation, and our own dining hall at Denison.
The students each made their own book representing their creative expression of the food system, and we hand-sewed the books with corn husk covers made by Erin Hartline, using husks we re-harvested from a large corn bale. For the exhibition, each student submitted his or her best work, which was then juried by Christian Faur, and the students curated the show as a collective. The exhibition represents the culmination of our work this term.
