Denison’s Laura C. Harris Series welcomes Jen Taylor Friedman, a Jewish scribe, scholar and educator presenting “Texting God: Women Who Write Torah.”

As a soferet – woman Torah scribe – Friedman became the first woman to complete a Torah scroll in 2007. Friedman also created the Tefillin Barbie, which has been featured in a number of prominent Jewish publications. The scribal arts, which include painting, illumination, and manuscript design as well as calligraphy, are an integral part of the Jewish practice and culture which historically have been reserved completely for men. As a woman engaging in what some might consider subversive work, Friedman will talk about broadening accessibility for women as an artistic pioneer in her field.
