The Vail Series welcomes Pablo Ziegler presenting a U.S. premiere performance titled “12 Hours.” Named for the time difference between the port cities of Buenos Aires and Yokohama, “12 Hours” explores a marriage of Argentine nuevo tango with Japanese traditional music, while celebrating the long legacy of the tango in Japan.

The tango arrived in Japan in the 1920’s and its popularity boomed through the 30s and 40s, spurred in part by the prohibition of American jazz during World War II. Ziegler was pianist for tango grand-maestro Piazzolla’s legendary quintet for over a decade, and has led his own groups for over 20 years. Ziegler will be joined on stage by Rodolpho Zanetti, bandoneon; Yumi Kurosawa, koto; Kojiro Umezake, shakuhachi; Pedro Giraudo, bass; Seth Rogers, percussion; and special guest ETHEL.

While this concert will have a decidedly ‘world music’ flavor, The Pablo Ziegler Trio was awarded Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2018 for their album, “Jazz Tango.” “12 Horas” was commissioned by the Yokohama Arts Foundation and the Yokohama Noh Theater.
