The Director’s office is responsible for the overall coordination and oversight of Facilities Services operation and budget. Long-term planning, personnel, staff development, campus liaison, work control, and other administrative functions are provided. Questions or comments related to all areas of Facilities Services operation can be directed to this office.
The Building Services department is responsible for the daily cleaning and project work in all campus buildings. Other responsibilities include: trash collection and recycling; carpet repairs and new installation; window covering repairs and new installation; swimming pool chemical maintenance and cleaning; cleaning of university rental units; movement of equipment and furniture within and between campus buildings; setups required for the support of campus activities and special events; building interior spraying for insects; surplus storage responsibility for university property; upholstery repairs and recovering of furniture used in all campus buildings; snow removal from specified campus locations.
The Facilities Services Maintenance Department is responsible for maintaining and making minor improvements to all campus buildings in the areas of carpentry, locksmithing, painting, and plumbing. Included is repair work, minor renovation, master-keying, card-access control, roofing, structural maintenance, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, domestic and sanitary water systems, and a variety of related tasks. Doors, locks, windows, door closures, clogged drains, leaky faucets, and drinking fountains are items typically repaired.
Central Stores is responsible for maintaining an inventory of items consumed by the university and for locating and purchasing maintenance-related items not carried in inventory. Spare parts and supplies, mostly used by the maintenance staff, are stocked and purchased. The department also functions as a central receiving facility for the university.
Engineering Services is responsible for maintaining and operating the following:
- Campus high and low voltage electrical systems
- Interior and exterior lighting systems
- Emergency power generators
- Fire and security alarm equipment
- Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems
- Fume exhaust equipment
- Steam supply and distribution
- Preventive maintenance for mechanical and electrical equipment
- Sound systems support
- Heating Plant Operations
- Energy Management System and Programming
- Elevator repair and maintenance
Communicating Temperature Problems or Special Needs:
Temperature and ventilation problems or needs during normal working hours can be reported to the Facilities Services Office at 740-587-6265 or e-mailed to physplant@denison.edu. In an effort to conserve energy, some heating and air conditioning systems may be scheduled to be off at certain times during the day and after normal working hours. Should it become necessary to modify schedules to accommodate special needs or changes to schedules, please contact the Facilities Services Office at 740-587-6265.
The Grounds department is responsible for the 1200-acre campus, maintaining 450 acres including 30 acres of athletic fields. Responsibilities include general landscaping for the campus, which entails mowing, pruning, planting, athletic field maintenance, parking lots, roadways, sidewalks, outside trash removal, leaf clean-up and snow removal. Special landscaping projects and exterior signage are also the responsibility of this department.
The Construction and Energy Management division is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising capital improvements initiated by non-Facilities Services departments and most major building renovations. This division will meet with the requesting department to develop project goals and then coordinate estimating, design, and construction. Funding for projects is typically provided by the requesting department. This division is also responsible for tracking utility costs and initiating energy conservation programs and projects for the campus.
Communicating Project Needs
Requests for estimates or project development can be submitted at anytime to the Facilities Services office. All requests for projects must be accompanied by appropriate approvals and will generally require an account number for billing.
