In 1916, celebrated Harlem Renaissance poet and playwright, Angelina Weld Grimké, described one of her characters who shines in spite of the violent prejudice and turbulence of her time, as “loving, young, joyous, and vital.”
In the fall of 2020, the Denison Theatre Department presented HERE US, a virtual performance platform for students of color – amidst the violent prejudice and turbulence of a double pandemic – with the aim of releasing some of Denison’s own (and much needed) love, youth, joy, and vitality.
This year, we present HERE US as a live performance event, featuring a whole new series of bold, original works written and performed by students of color. including spoken word, music, dance, and digital visual art, which celebrate many facets of the complex POC identity in the Denison community. Through various forms of expression, the artists featured in this production have worked collaboratively to create a holistic and celebratory image of youth, joy, and vitality.
Free and open to the public at 8 p.m. on March 3, 4, and 5, however advanced tickets are required. Public ticket availability ends 24 hours before performance. Get tickets, more information, and read the COVID guidelines.
