Cynthia Guerrero will graduate this spring with a double major in Spanish and anthropology & sociology. As a Fulbright grantee, Cynthia will serve as an English teaching assistant and cultural ambassador in Peru.
A native of Chicago, Cynthia credits the teachers who taught her English as inspiration for wanting to assist others with their English language learning. Cynthia gained formal teaching experience through a journalism internship with GlobalGirl Media-Chicago, where she developed a curriculum to teach young women skills in media literacy, writing, social justice, and mindfulness.
Between her academic work at Denison and her experiences as a Posse Scholar, Athens Democracy Forum Student Delegate, and Public Policy and International Affairs Fellow, Cynthia has developed an interest in studying the relationship between languages, cultures, and education. Cynthia has been active on campus with Denison’s First-Generation Network and as a peer advisor with the Office of First-Year Experience. “I aspire to a career where I can help make higher education more accessible on a domestic and international level,” says Cynthia.
Cynthia is one of five Denisonians who were offered prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Grants for the 2022-2023 academic year. Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright grants foster mutual cross-cultural understanding as awardees spend a post-graduate academic year teaching English, conducting research, or studying at a university in one of over 140 participating countries. Fulbright grants are awarded on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as awardees’ record of service and leadership potential in their respective fields.
