Students from the Department of Physics & Astronomy, along with their mentor, Dr. Wes Walter, volunteered to assist with Go Baby Go, in their efforts to provide children in need a means of mobility to explore their world. Mobility is important to peer interaction, cognitive development, and in motor skill development.
The goal was to make high-quality modifications to the cars that meet the needs of the child, and that are safe, reliable, and attractive in appearance.
Modifications were made with padded framing, large switches, and speed controls to allow the child to operate their car. The specific car to be used and modifications required were determined through an evaluation done by experienced volunteers and the child’s parents and therapists.
Together with Dr. Walter, the students used their creativity and problem-solving skills to modify two cars.
