Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Dr. John McHugh was the first recipient of the DCGA Faculty Member of the Year Award in May 2013.
The award was created in order to honor faculty for their commitment and service to the development of students as scholars, leaders, and community members. Recipients of the award are to be faculty members who facilitate the growth of students into autonomous thinkers and well-rounded individuals, who embrace community, engage with inequality, and overcome adversity. They may build relationships with students through classroom engagement, service learning, academic advising, personal mentorship, and campus participation and presence.
Students nominated Dr. McHugh because he demonstrates a commitment to developing student excellence and leadership through organizational advising, mentoring, and community presence. He exemplifies dedication to the betterment of the student body beyond his job description. He is recognized among students as an exceptional teacher who challenges and supports the development of the individual intellect and the collective spirit. Dr. McHugh reaffirms what Dr. Dale T. Knobel refers to as “Denison’s commitment to the art and the craft, the discipline and teaching in its many forms.”
