Set in the late 1970s, 9 to 5 The Musical is an outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic story of friendship and revenge set in the Rolodex era. The musical is based on the 1980 hit movie, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and a book by Patricia Resnick.

9 to 5 follows the story of Violet, Judy, and Doralee, three women who plot against their pompous and misogynistic boss, Mr. Hart. Hilarity and chaos ensue when the women believe they’ve accidentally poisoned Hart. They decide to kidnap him before he can report them to the police.

Filled with mishaps and comedy, the musical’s fast pace and quick humor make for an entertaining show for both audiences and cast members.

“It is such a fun and upbeat show,” says Maddie Geschke ’27, a lead in the production. “I’ve never seen or been a part of anything like this.”

The production is full of dance numbers and wild scene changes. “It’s a huge undertaking,” says Geschke. “There are so many technical aspects, scenes, and lines.”

Director Brad Frenette, assistant professor of music theater, rises to the musical’s twin challenges of quick changes and complicated choreography. “Brad is great,” says Celia Car ’28, an understudy. “He’s really detailed what he wants the actors to be doing for every scene.”

The production brings more energy than the original Dolly Parton movie. Everyone is singing and dancing. “The show is so funny,” Car says.

The long rehearsals have helped the cast of 25 students to bond. “It’s a huge undertaking for the crew and the cast, but it’s so worth it,” says Geschke.
