At Denison’s Academic Awards Convocation on April 20, 2018, Margot Singer, associate professor of English and director of the Lisska Center, was recognized with the Bonar Family Mentorship and Teaching Excellence Award.
In presenting the award, Provost Kim Coplin noted: “Today we recognize a colleague whose vision, energy, and dedication have guided the intellectual mission of the college.
“She teaches students that good writing is an artistic discipline that comes not from genius or inspiration but from practice, hard work, revision, and openness to new ways of thinking. She is energetic and imaginative in creating a variety of approaches and materials in her courses, while she uses improvisational teaching methods to mentor senior writers in their year-long creative projects.
“Her dedication to excellent teaching has guided her work to reinvent Teaching Matters (with her friend and colleague Sue Davis), to imagine and create the Center for Learning and Teaching, and to lead the Lisska Center in new directions.
“She mentors students to help them pursue lifelong intellectual goals, and she supports faculty to replenish our intellectual excitement and pass it on to our students.”
The Bonar Family Mentorship and Teaching Excellence Award has been established by the Bonar Family to recognize exemplary mentoring and teaching by a Denison faculty member. The recipient of the award has demonstrated a clear commitment to outstanding teaching and to the advancement of liberal education through inspiring, advising, and mentoring students throughout their college careers and beyond.
