Language Placement
Denison’s foreign language requirement states that students who have taken a language in high school must complete the equivalent of the third semester (211). The AGRS department requires such students to complete GRK or LAT 211 at Denison to fulfill the requirement — we do not provide language waivers.
For all students who have taken ancient Greek or Latin in high school, we recommend completing your language requirement as early as possible in your college career.
Students who have taken ancient Greek in high school should contact the department chair to discuss placement based on their individual experience.
Students who have completed two years (or more) of Latin before college but who have not taken AP Latin or the IB Latin curriculum will be offered a placement test before registering for classes. Placement test scores are only good for a two-year period before a student must retake the placement test.
Students with only one year of previous Latin experience are required to begin in Latin 111 (first semester).
Students who have taken AP Latin or the IB Latin curriculum are placed according to the following guidelines:
