TUTTI, a week-long festival of new art - and by art, we mean performance, creative and fine arts, occurs every two years. Denison hosts TUTTI to celebrate new works and creative connections between disciplines. Featured guest artists and ensembles come to campus along with more than 35 composers from all around the world.
TUTTI 2022 is the tenth anniversary of the festival. This year, we are joined by Pulitzer-Prize winning composer, Julia Wolfe, Fifth House Ensemble, ETHEL, (one of Denison’s Ensembles-in-Residence), percussionist Cameron Leach, actor Michael Lockwood Crouch, saxophonist Logan Moore, and theatre artist Quenna Lené Barrett.
The week’s activities include concerts, masterclasses, roundtable discussions, open rehearsals and much more. Fifth House Ensemble will perform two amazing programs. The first is Journey Live; live music performed while students play the video game Journey. The second begins with a week’s worth of student and faculty residency led by Quenna Lené Barrett and members of Fifth House Ensemble. These sessions will inspire the We Are Good concert, music by the ensemble on Saturday evening, March 26, sponsored by the Vail Series at Swasey Chapel at 7pm.
In addition to the guest artists, Denison’s own symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber singers, jazz ensemble, and featured faculty artists will take the stage to perform works by guest composers and our featured composer, Julia Wolfe.
ETHEL will showcase Friday evening’s concert with music that underscores contemporary fiction, narrated by award-winning actor Michael Lockwood Crouch.
“TUTTI is a musical term that means ‘all together’ and the entire week is a celebration of new art and the ways art can bring us together,” says Ching-chu Hu, founder of TUTTI and director of the Vail Series. “In addition to concerts, we’ll have discussions and meals, workshops and seminars. We’ll have visual art that studio art students create in response to the music submitted for the festival. We reach across the campus to modern languages and athletics, mindfulness programs as well as other student groups, such as the Gaming Guild. It will be a fantastic week!”
